American Voices: A Literary Exploration Through Time (ages 11-14)
Embark on a journey through American History that travels off the beaten path! Together we will investigate the untold stories of marginalized American groups from past to present. Each quarter is a stand-alone class focusing on a specific ELA & Social Studies concept. Individual topics and content will be chosen with student input, while the theme for each quarter is set by the instructor. We will seek to uncover the stories of historically underrepresented groups and reveal how their experiences and actions have shaped the country we currently live in. The fourth quarter will bring us to the present day.
Outside Work: A small amount of work outside of meeting hours in the form of reading and informal writing will be assigned.
Requirements: Students must be able to read and write at a 5th grade level or higher for this class.
CONTENT WARNING: The course covers mature and emotionally charged topics such as genocide, racism, eugenics, oppression, political activism, etc. Every effort will be made to ensure the discussions and materials are age-appropriate and taught with sensitivity.
Supplies Fee: No fee is required for this class, but students will be expected to obtain a copy of the main text (can buy or borrow from the library).
Students should bring writing utensils (pen/pencil & highlighter), a folder, a notebook, and assigned reading materials (book or other assigned documents).
