- Description
The focus of this class will be to learn to speak French through Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS)! This class is a continuation from quarter 1. (Scroll down for information about joining as a new student.)
Students should be come ready to engage actively in the telling and re-telling of simple (silly!) stories through listening and conversation, acting them out, playing games, & incorporating physical movement/sign language.
Ability to read is required, but our emphasis will be on listening and speaking.
By the end of class, students will be able to understand and re-tell simple short stories in French.
TPRS is a language instruction methodology that leans heavily on language acquisition principles that allow students to progress more quickly towards novel (unplanned) language production and communication. And it's a lot more fun than studying charts of verb forms!
Because an emphasis is placed on immersive language techniques, a positive attitude toward immersion is important. No experience/prior knowledge needed.
Between classes, students will be asked to listen to a recording of a variation of that week's story, practice re-telling their story aloud, and illustrate the story on a comic page.
New students are welcome to join as language is cumulative and this class leans heavily on immersive language principles. Newly joining students and their families should, however, be prepared for a "silent" period of listening & catching up as previously enrolled students will have already established some foundational skills & vocabulary. This may feel like a fun adventure for some kids, but could feel stressful for others--families should make the decision they feel best suits their learner's personality and comfort level.
Students will have an optional opportunity to present or display work at the Quarter 2 HCA Showcase on 112/12 at 1:15 pm.
