American Voices: A Literary Exploration Through Time
Embark on a journey through American History that travels off the beaten path! Together we will investigate the untold stories of marginalized American groups from past to present. Each quarter is a stand-alone class focusing on a specific ELA & Social Studies concept. Individual topics and content will be chosen with student input, while the theme for each quarter is set by the instructor. We will seek to uncover the stories of historically underrepresented groups and reveal how their experiences and actions have shaped the country we currently live in.
Notes:This class will involve a small amount of work outside of meeting hours.
An optional reading list will be provided for students who want to dive deeper on their own.
Requirements:
Students must be able to read and write at a 5th grade level or higher.
Because the course covers mature and emotionally charged topics, please be sure your student is ready to explore issues such as genocide, racism, eugenics, oppression, political activism, etc. before signing up. Every effort will be made to ensure the discussions and materials are age-appropriate and taught with sensitivity.
Fee:A supply fee is required for some quarters to cover the cost of reading materials, which will be provided by the instructor.
Instructor: Danielle Horst
